You Can Make A Difference!

Within the span of less than two generations, the number of obese and overweight children and youth has more than doubled.(Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2007). Specialists predict that by 2010 nearly half of the children in North America will be overweight or obese.

Unfortunately, most school lunches help to establish and reinforce a taste for fast food style meals that are high in saturated fat and cholesterol, such as fried chicken nuggets, pepperoni pizza, cheeseburgers, and French fries. These foods are more likely to lead to obesity and to related health problems.

Don't you think our kids deserve a healthier CHOICE?

CHOICE (Consumers for Healthy Options In Children’s Education) was launched in 1994 by a group of concerned parents to promote a choice of wholesome plant-based meals and nutrition education in our nation’s schools.

• CHOICE seeks to provide our school children with healthy alternatives to the meat and dairy-based diet that prevails in our nation’s schools. Such a diet promotes the current obesity epidemic, growing incidence of food poisoning, and learning disorders. It leads to lifelong addictions to foods that raise the risk of chronic diseases, which kill 1.4 million Americans annually and burden the nation with hundreds of billions of dollars in medical costs and lost productivity.

• CHOICE provides valuable resources for the key constituencies in this effort: parents, students, teachers, school administrators, and food service personnel. Each section is supported by fact sheets and links to additional resources. It is supported entirely through individual contributions.

The First Lady Weighs In

CHOICE knows that healthy meals are plant-centered meals. Children deserve good quality school lunches that are made from fresh produce and whole grains.

They also deserve dairy alternatives and vegetarian options so that all children can eat a full and satisfying meal.
